Salvaging Plastic New Hazard

Plastic salvaged from electronic waste is posing serious health and environmental hazards. Electronic waste recycling in the informal sector has always been a cause for concern but environmentalists have now focused on plastic salvaged from electronic waste as the new hazard. Environmentalists have pointed out that toxic plastic is being recycled and toys and other household items made out of it, which is hazardous not only for those involved in the recycling work but also for the end users. Causing se converted to toys and other articles of household goods, posing an imminent threat not only to those involved in the recycling work but also to those who end up using these products.Delhi-based NGO Toxics Link, in its study, has found the presence of brominated flame retardants (BFR) in recycled plastic across the city. BFRs are used in electronic items to make them fire resistant, but the chemicals are extremely harmful for humans. The chemical leaks from plastic products very slowly; but when recycling, it becomes particularly hazardous, especially in India where waste recycling is mostly done in the unorganized sector without any proper safety measures in place.
