Going Green With Carbon Credits

With the amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increasing to alarming levels, there has been growing international concern about the immense harm they cause to the environment. Instruments like carbon credits and carbon offset were introduced in order to improve the scenario by encouraging companies which are more eco friendly in the manner in which they conduct their business.

The idea of carbon credits was introduced recently. A single carbon credit gives the permission for emission of one tonne of CO2 or a similar amount of some other greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. The maximum amount of emissions throughout the world can be controlled through the carbon trading system in which carbon credits can be sold and purchased.

Every organization is given a fixed amount of carbon credits that show the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that it can discharge. Organizations resort to carbon trading when their emissions go beyond their share of carbon credits in order to buy credits due to a legal compulsion. They buy them from companies with lower emissions having spare carbon credits.

As a result, the worldwide carbon emissions stay within prescribed levels, and the companies resort to ecologically sustainable means of conducting business so that their emissions are lower and they are spared of making additional expenditure on carbon credits. This system is beneficial for companies using ecologically sustainable techniques to keep striving in this respect as they can make more profits from carbon credits business.

Carbon credits can be bought easily from many agencies, just like any other monetary instrument, as they are sold in a free market. In fact, even if you are not representing a company, you can choose to purchase carbon credits so as to reduce your carbon footprint. The money that you put in this way is channelized towards funding ecological projects in any region on the planet so that the emissions made because of your activities can be nullified.
